What Is a Tarot Birth Card?
A tarot birth card is a card of the Major Arcana that your birth date reduces to. Add the month and day you were born, reduce the total until it is 22 or lower, and the result gives you two cards: a Personality card and a Soul card. Everyone born on the same month and day shares the same pair.
Unlike a card drawn in a reading, your birth cards never change. They are not a forecast and they do not respond to what is happening this week. They describe a pattern — how you tend to meet the world, and what sits underneath that.
The Method
How to Calculate Your Tarot Birth Cards
Add your birth month to your birth day. If the total is higher than 22, add its digits together and keep reducing until it is 22 or lower. The birth year is not used.
Born 14 March
3 + 14 = 17
1 + 7 = 8
17 is already 22 or lower, so it stands as the Personality card: The Star (XVII). Reduce once more for 8 — the Soul card, Strength (VIII).
Born 28 November
11 + 28 = 39
3 + 9 = 12
1 + 2 = 3
39 is too high, so it reduces to 12 — the Personality card, The Hanged Man (XII). Reducing again gives 3, the Soul card, The Empress (III).
- Totals of 10 to 21 give you that card as your Personality card, and its digit sum as your Soul card. Most birth dates work this way.
- Single-digit totals of 1 to 9 need nine added to find the Personality card. Born 4 January: 1 + 4 = 5, so the Personality card is 14, Temperance, and the Soul card is 5, The Hierophant. It holds because 14 reduces back to 5.
- A total of exactly 19 gives three cards rather than two — The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. It is the only total in the deck that does.
- A total of exactly 22 pairs The Fool, numbered 0 but counted as 22 at the end of the journey, with The Emperor.

The two numbers your date produces are not interchangeable. Each position says something different, and reading them together is where the method earns its keep.

Personality card
How you move through the world and how other people experience you. Your working style, your instincts under pressure, the lesson you keep meeting in daily life. The more visible of the two.
The reduced number
Soul card
What sits underneath — the deeper motive you return to when the noise clears, and what you are quietly working toward across a lifetime. People usually recognise it more slowly than their Personality card.
Only for totals of 19
Destiny card
When a date totals 19, a third card sits between the other two. Wheel of Fortune joins The Sun and The Magician, and is read as the turning point the other two move around.

Some traditions link Major Arcana cards to astrological signs, but the two systems are calculated differently and will not line up neatly. Birth cards come from arithmetic on the date, not from the position of anything in the sky.

Month and day only. Other systems fold the year in to produce a year card that changes annually — a separate calculation from the one on this page.

Take what fits and leave what doesn't. A birth card is a lens for reflection, not a verdict, and plenty of people find only one of their two cards recognisable at first.
