Questions to Ask a Medium Before and During a Reading

Grief has a way of making an ordinary decision feel unusually tender.

Choosing a medium can bring hope and hesitation in the same breath. People often tell me they felt a little foolish for wanting it, or worried they were setting themselves up for disappointment. Some open the chat, type a name, and then delete it — not because they've changed their mind, but because saying it out loud makes the loss real again.

As a Willow Whispers advisor, I've sat with that moment many times, and I want you to know there's nothing to apologize for in any of it. You don't need to hide the hope. You don't need to arrive certain, and you don't need to believe a particular person will come through in order to deserve a gentle, honest conversation.

If that's where you are right now, you're not alone. The right questions won't guarantee contact — nothing can — but they can help you understand the process, protect what needs protecting, and stay connected to your own judgment throughout.

What Should You Ask Before You Begin?

A profile may tell you that someone offers mediumship without explaining how they actually work. It's completely reasonable to ask before you start.

  • How would you describe your approach to mediumship?

  • What information, if any, would you like from me first?

  • What happens if nothing feels clear or recognizable?

  • Can I pause, change focus, or end the reading at any point?

These aren't suspicious questions. They're consent and fit questions, and any advisor worth your time will welcome them.

One thing worth setting straight early: an ethical medium should never promise that one specific loved one will communicate. Which impressions arrive, and in what order, isn't something any of us control. A reader who guarantees a particular person is promising something they cannot deliver.

How Should You Open the Conversation?

Some people share every detail because silence feels uncomfortable. Others share nothing at all, hoping the reading will prove itself. Neither extreme is necessary, and both can make the session harder than it needs to be.

A simple opening works well: "I'm open to a mediumship reading, and I'd like you to describe what you're receiving before I add much context." That tells your advisor exactly what kind of conversation you want, without turning it into a test.

If there's a particular person in your heart, you're welcome to say so. Just hold it gently. A reading that doesn't include them isn't evidence of anything — not about your bond, not about your grief, and not about what happens after death.

How Do Mediums Actually Receive Information?

Understanding this often takes the pressure off, because it explains why messages can arrive in such unexpected forms.

Every advisor experiences their gifts a little differently. Some receive images in the mind. Others suddenly know something they couldn't have learned through ordinary conversation. A medium may hear a word or short phrase, feel an emotion or physical sensation that belongs to the person coming through, or become aware of a scent carrying personal significance — a familiar perfume, fresh flowers, pipe tobacco, baking on a Sunday.

Sometimes what arrives is a small, specific quality rather than a name or a message. A way of laughing. A habit. The feeling of someone standing in a particular doorway.

Many mediums also work alongside spiritual tools — tarot and oracle cards, astrology, Reiki and energy healing, palmistry, numerology, or pendulum and dowsing — and most naturally blend several during a single session. It's part of why no two readings are ever exactly alike, and why the same medium may work quite differently with two people on the same evening.

What Questions Work Best During the Reading?

Open questions invite description. Closed ones tend to force an answer that may not be there yet.

A few that tend to help:

  • Can you describe what you're receiving before I add details?

  • What part of this feels clearest to you?

  • Is there a memory or quality I can sit with?

  • How should I respond if something doesn't fit?

Notice that none of these assume identity, certainty, or a promised message. They leave room for you to listen — and to say "I'm not sure" without it derailing anything.

It also helps to keep your feedback simple as the reading unfolds. A plain yes, no, or I don't know gives your advisor something to work with, without you unintentionally filling in the details yourself.

Can "I Don't Know" Really Be a Complete Answer?

Yes. And I'd gently encourage you to let it be one.

A detail may land immediately. It may make sense three weeks later, in the middle of something unrelated. Or it may never fit at all, and that's genuinely okay.

Imagine your medium mentions a red bicycle, and nothing comes to mind. The steadiest response is simply, "I don't recognize that." You don't need to search through every childhood memory trying to make it work. Your advisor can move on, and the reading is not diminished by it.

One of the biggest worries I hear is some version of "What if I get it wrong?" You can't. Your only job in a mediumship reading is to be honest about what resonates and what doesn't.

How Do You Protect Your Own Boundaries?

You're allowed to check in with yourself at any point during the conversation, and to say so plainly:

  • Can we move away from this topic?

  • Could you explain that without making a prediction?

  • I'm feeling overwhelmed — can we pause?

  • I have enough for today. Can we end here?

A genuine reading should leave you feeling respected and supported, never frightened into another session or pressured to spend more than you'd planned. If anyone suggests that only they can protect you, or creates urgency where there was none, that's your signal to close the chat. You never owe an explanation.

Every advisor at Willow Whispers is personally vetted before joining our community, because this work asks for real integrity. Our Willow Whispers FAQs cover privacy, staying anonymous, and what to do if an experience doesn't meet the standard you expected. And if you'd like to understand how mediumship differs from other kinds of reading before you choose, our guide to psychic and medium readings explains the distinction in more depth.

Why Live Chat Can Feel Gentler for Grief

Speaking about someone you've lost out loud is hard. Typing it is often easier, and text chat gives you room that a phone call doesn't.

You can pause before replying when something catches in your throat. You can reread an earlier message when a detail suddenly makes sense. You can gather yourself without the pressure of silence, ask a follow-up as a memory surfaces, and share only as much as you're able to.

Many clients tell me they return to their chat days or weeks later and find something they missed entirely the first time. Grief moves slowly, and a written conversation waits for you.

What You'll Take With You

Grief isn't something a reading resolves. It's a response to loving someone, and it carries confusion, longing, and uncertainty about the future all at once. There's no single right way to hold it, and no timeline you're behind on.

A mediumship reading can be one meaningful experience within that much larger process. It doesn't determine the truth of your relationship with the person who died. It doesn't have to produce closure to have been worth having.

Some people leave with a message they recognize immediately. Others leave with something quieter but no less valuable — a lighter heart, a sense of nearness they hadn't felt in months, or the comfort of knowing they no longer have to carry the question alone.

Read the profile. Ask about boundaries. Give yourself full permission to stop if the conversation doesn't feel right. And whenever you feel ready, browse our advisors and choose the person whose approach feels gentle to you. We're honored to walk beside you.

Your reading doesn't have to begin with certainty. It simply begins with one honest question — and a willingness to see what the conversation brings.

If grief is affecting your sleep, your safety, or your daily life, please consider reaching out to a qualified health or mental-health professional. Willow Whispers offers spiritual guidance and comfort, and it works best alongside that care rather than in place of it.
